Te mapa
El Tocuyo lies in the valley of the Tocuyo River in Lara state, western Venezuela. Founded in 1545, it is one of the oldest Spanish towns in the country and is often called the mother city, because expeditions from here went on to found other settlements, including Barquisimeto. From above, its streets form the classic Spanish colonial grid of square blocks around a central plaza.
Much of the colonial town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1950 and rebuilt afterward, so the historic street plan has outlasted many of its original buildings. Ruins of old churches remain as reminders. On the map, the grid still reads clearly, bounded by the river on one side and by farmland spreading across the valley floor.
The valley around El Tocuyo is known for sugar cane cultivation and for the tamunangue, a traditional music and dance tradition from Lara. Hills rise on both sides, drier and more open than the irrigated valley below. An El Tocuyo map poster shows the old grid within its narrow, fertile corridor, a clear image of a town placed by its founders with care.
Streets meet at right angles in regular square blocks around the main plaza, a pattern dating back to the Spanish founding and still the most visible feature on the map.
The river runs along the edge of town through the valley, a natural line that shaped where the settlement was placed and where fields could be irrigated.
Beyond the grid, sugar cane fields and farm roads fill the valley floor, forming a band of cultivation between the town and the surrounding hills.

Koteā ko El Tocuyo
El Tocuyo holds a special place in Venezuelan history, and many families trace their origins to Lara's valleys. A map of the mother city offers a quiet way to honour that story and the landscape that shaped it.
Write a family name, a year or a phrase in Spanish in the title and subtitle, and personalise the coordinates line. The poster comes in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, with a free watermarked preview to check before buying.
