Te mapa
Engaru lies in Hokkaido's Okhotsk region, in a valley shaped by the Yubetsu River. From above, the town stretches along the valley floor. Its streets make a neat Hokkaido-style grid, bounded by the river on one side and wooded hills on the other, with farmland continuing up and down the valley.
The grid is typical of towns laid out during Hokkaido's settlement period. Straight, evenly spaced blocks line up with the railway and the main road. On the town's edge, a small, steep hill rises out of the flat ground, and the river bends through fields toward the Sea of Okhotsk.
Engaru Station is known among railway fans as a switchback. Trains on the Sekihoku Main Line arrive and then depart back the way they came, leaving the track as a distinctive dead end. An Engaru map poster catches that rail line, the river and the tidy grid between them.
The railway enters Engaru and ends there, so trains must reverse to continue. On the map, the line appears as a clear terminus in the middle of town.
The river runs along the valley past the town. Its curves soften the edge of the straight Hokkaido grid.
Evenly spaced parallel streets make up the centre. The result is a clean, measured pattern that works well in black and white.

For people who have lived in or travelled through eastern Hokkaido, the valley grid and the dead-end railway are unmistakable. It is a quiet map with a small, memorable detail.
