Te mapa
Erenhot lies in Inner Mongolia on China's border with Mongolia, facing the Mongolian town of Zamyn-Uud across the frontier. Around it the Gobi steppe spreads flat and open, so the city appears on the map as a clear, planned shape set against an almost empty landscape.
The Beijing to Ulaanbaatar railway passes through here, and because the track gauge changes at the border, trains have long stopped at Erenhot to have their bogies exchanged. The rail yards, the border crossing and the highway leading north are prominent lines on the map, emphasising the city's role as a gateway.
Erenhot is also known for dinosaur fossils found in the surrounding basin, and the city has embraced that identity with large dinosaur sculptures. An Erenhot map poster shows the broad planned streets, the railway and the vast surrounding plain, a composition defined by distance and open space.
Roads and rail converge on the frontier with Mongolia just north of the city, the point where China's main overland route to Ulaanbaatar crosses.
The rail yards stand out on the map, the place where trains on the Beijing to Ulaanbaatar line switch between standard and broad gauge bogies.
The city ends abruptly in flat steppe, so its planned grid reads as a distinct, compact shape surrounded by wide and nearly blank land.
