Te mapa
Etajima occupies much of an island group in Hiroshima Bay, southwest of Hiroshima and across the water from Kure. From above, the shape is intricate: a coastline of coves, bays and headlands, with a deep inlet cutting into the land and forested hills rising in the interior. Settlements gather along the flatter ground by the water.
The city is known as the home of the former Imperial Japanese Naval Academy, whose site is now used by the Maritime Self-Defense Force as an officer candidate school. Its red-brick buildings and grounds sit beside the water, one of the most recognisable places on the island.
Bridges connect the island to its neighbours and ultimately to the mainland, while ferries still link it to Hiroshima and Kure. An Etajima map poster shows the whole composition, the island's irregular outline, its inlets and the narrow roads that follow the shore.
Bays, coves and headlands give the island a complex outline, the kind of shape that makes a striking poster in black and white.
The former naval academy, now an officer candidate school, occupies a waterfront site with historic buildings, a notable landmark on the island.
Bridges link Etajima to neighbouring islands and the mainland, while ferry routes cross the bay, placing the island clearly within Hiroshima Bay.
