Gosen lies on the eastern edge of the Echigo Plain in Niigata Prefecture, where the flat rice country starts to rise into forested hills. On a map you can see that change: to the west, a fine grid of paddy boundaries and farm roads, and to the east, the contour-like tangle of mountain valleys. The town centre sits in between, a tight cluster of streets near the railway.
The Agano River, one of the largest rivers in the region, passes close by on its way to the Sea of Japan, and smaller streams cross the town's farmland. These waterways cut gentle curves through an otherwise orderly landscape, adding movement to what would otherwise be a very geometric print.

The broad Agano runs along the northern edge of the area, its wide bed and gravel bars providing a strong natural line against the regular paddies.
