Te mapa
Holtsville is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, in central Long Island, New York. From above, it is a mixture of suburban cul-de-sacs, wooded patches, commercial strips and large institutional sites. The Long Island Expressway and the Long Island Rail Road cross the area, forming strong straight lines through the otherwise curving pattern of residential streets.
Holtsville has an unexpected national profile: it is home to a large Internal Revenue Service processing centre and to the unique ZIP code 00501, one of the lowest in the United States. Locally it is also known for its groundhog, Holtsville Hal, who makes a prediction every February.
A Holtsville map poster shows the typical Long Island mix of planned neighbourhoods and open land, divided by major transport routes. The expressway and rail line cut clear paths across the frame, while smaller streets fill the spaces between. In print, the map is quiet and detailed, with a varied, suburban texture.
The Long Island Expressway crosses Holtsville in a long, straight band, one of the most prominent lines on the map.
The Long Island Rail Road passes through the area, a second strong line that divides residential neighbourhoods and connects them westwards.
Residential streets form curves, loops and cul-de-sacs between wooded lots, giving much of the map a soft, irregular pattern.
