Planned road grid
Straight roads cross at right angles in the Hokkaido manner, forming neat rectangular blocks. On paper the pattern looks almost like graph paper, which is restful to look at.

Te mapa
Honchō sits on the flat land north of Hakodate in southern Hokkaido, where the plain meets the first low hills of the Oshima Peninsula. The map shows an orderly layout of residential blocks, straight roads and rail, set among large field plots that give the whole area a measured, surveyed look.
Hokkaido was settled and laid out largely from the late nineteenth century, and the grid here reflects that planned approach. Roads run in long straight lines and meet mostly at right angles. The hills to the north and east bring the first curves, where roads follow valleys toward the mountains and lakes beyond.
A Honchō map poster works because of its regularity. The steady grid fills the frame without crowding it, and the field boundaries around it add a second, larger pattern. It is a calm image of an everyday northern Japanese town and suits spare, minimal rooms.
Straight roads cross at right angles in the Hokkaido manner, forming neat rectangular blocks. On paper the pattern looks almost like graph paper, which is restful to look at.
Farm plots surround the built-up area in large rectangles. Their outlines extend the town's geometry outward and give the edges of the poster a softer rhythm.
Low wooded hills rise beyond the plain, and roads start to curve as they climb. They add contrast to the straight lines of the town below.
