Te mapa
Hwacheon is the seat of a mountainous county in Gangwon-do, only a short distance south of the line that divides the Korean peninsula. The town sits in a curve of the Bukhangang, the North Han River. From above, a narrow strip of flat land holds the streets, and steep, heavily wooded ridges close in on almost every side.
The county is known across Korea for its winter mountain trout festival. When the river freezes, visitors fish through holes cut in the ice, and crowds come from all over the country. Upstream, the Hwacheon Dam holds back Paroho Lake, a long reservoir with many arms that winds deep into the mountains.
A Hwacheon map poster shows a town set by its terrain. The streets form a small, tidy grid squeezed between river and slope. Roads can only leave along the valleys, and the water takes up much of the frame. On paper, the result is spare and calm.
The North Han River wraps around the town in a broad curve. The riverside is where the winter festival takes over the frozen water each January.
Hwacheon's streets fit into a small patch of level ground. Seen at map scale, the grid looks almost miniature against the surrounding forest.
Upstream from the town, the dam's reservoir branches into long, narrow fingers between the ridges. Its outline is one of the most unusual in the region.

Koteā ko Hwacheon
Hwacheon means something particular to people who did military service in the area, to winter visitors and to those who grew up among these ridges. A map of the river bend makes a restrained and personal reminder of the place.
