Te mapa
Hwasŏng is a county town in North Hamgyong Province, in the mountainous northeast of North Korea. The terrain is rugged, and settlements tend to occupy narrow valley floors, with streets and fields following rivers and streams between steep slopes. Seen from above, the built-up area is a thin, branching form, not a compact block.
Accessible information about the town is limited, so the map itself is the clearest description available: a modest network of roads, clusters of buildings along the valley, and farmland squeezed into whatever flat ground the mountains leave. Roads follow the same valleys that shaped the settlement and lead out of the frame toward neighbouring towns.
A Hwasŏng map poster is a spare composition. Much of the sheet is given to open ground, with only a few strong lines of streets and watercourses. It suits people who value maps as records of places that are hard to visit, and who appreciate the quiet shapes of small mountain settlements.
Buildings and roads gather along the valley floor, so the town reads as an elongated, branching shape that follows the lie of the land.
Steep ridges surround the settlement and leave large areas of the map empty. This gives the few lines of streets a strong visual weight.
Watercourses run through the valley with small fields beside them. They form fine, curving lines that echo the contours of the surrounding hills.
