Ilave lies in the Puno Region of southern Peru, on the high Altiplano at an altitude of around 3,800 metres. The town sits beside the Ilave River, which flows across the plain toward Lake Titicaca a short distance to the north. From above, the river curves past the town, and the surrounding land stretches out flat and open to the horizon.
The town is a centre for the Aymara communities of the area, and its streets form a fairly regular grid around a central square, with roads leading out across the plain. A bridge crosses the river, carrying the main road that runs along the shore of Lake Titicaca toward Bolivia.
