Te mapa
Iyo lies on the western coast of Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, facing the Iyo-nada, the western part of the Seto Inland Sea. From above, the city is a band of streets along the shore. It is densest around the old harbour centre of Gunchū, with newer districts spreading over the flat land toward Matsuyama. Behind them the terrain rises quickly into terraced hills.
Those slopes are planted with mandarin oranges and other citrus, a crop closely tied to Ehime. Small roads loop around the terraces in patterns quite unlike the straight streets below. The Yosan Line railway follows the coast, running so close to the water in places that its path almost traces the shoreline.
Iyo's best-known image is Shimonada Station, a small unstaffed stop on the older coastal line whose platform looks straight out over the sea. It has become a popular place to watch the sunset. An Iyo map poster keeps the close relationship between rail, road, shore and hillside, a slender composition shaped by the edge of the island.
The coastline forms a long, clean edge along the north-west of the map. It faces the calm waters of the Iyo-nada, with small harbours along the way.
The hillsides behind the city are planted with citrus. Their narrow roads curl around the slopes, adding fine, looping lines above the town.
The railway runs close to the water, a thin line along the shore that links Iyo to Matsuyama and continues down the coast to the south-west.

Koteā ko Iyo
Iyo is home to families who have farmed its hillsides for generations and to commuters who ride into Matsuyama each day. For visitors who watched the sun set from its coast, a map of the shoreline is a calm keepsake.
