Te mapa
Kaitaichi is the centre of Kaita, a small town in Aki District just east of central Hiroshima. From above, it occupies a narrow strip of flat land between the inner waters of Hiroshima Bay and the hills that rise behind it. Houses, roads and rail lines are packed tightly into that strip, with the slopes above left largely green.
The area has long been a crossing point. Kaitaichi grew as a post town on the old Saigoku Kaidō, the highway running west along the Seto Inland Sea, and today Kaitaichi Station is where the Kure Line meets the San'yō Main Line. On the map, these routes run almost parallel, bundling together as they pass through the town.
A Kaitaichi map poster shows a town defined by limits: the water in front, the hills behind, and the neighbouring cities on either side. Its streets are short and dense, and the lines of transport give the composition a clear direction, running east to west across the frame.
At Kaitaichi Station the Kure Line branches from the San'yō Main Line, and the two tracks run through town side by side before separating.
The inner edge of Hiroshima Bay forms the southern border, with river mouths and straight, engineered stretches of shore giving the waterline a sharp outline.
Wooded hills rise directly behind the town, leaving the upper part of the map almost empty and emphasising the density of the narrow lowland strip.
