Te mapa
Kutchan lies in western Hokkaido, in a broad valley beneath the near-perfect volcanic cone of Mount Yōtei. The town centre sits around Kutchan Station on the Hakodate Main Line, with a straightforward grid of streets, while roads lead west across farmland toward the slopes of Niseko Annupuri.
Kutchan is best known internationally for Grand Hirafu, part of the Niseko ski area, which lies within the town's boundaries. Deep, dry winter snow has made the area one of Japan's best-known ski destinations, and the resort village has its own looser web of roads and lodges on the mountainside, separate from the older town centre.
A Kutchan map poster shows both sides of the place: a farming and railway town on the valley floor, and a resort area rising up the slopes. The empty mountain spaces around them give the composition clarity, and the two centres sit in balance across the sheet.
Streets around the station form a compact, regular grid, the working heart of Kutchan with shops, homes and the rail line running through.
On the lower slopes of Niseko Annupuri, winding roads and lodges form a separate cluster that looks quite different from the town below.
The volcano rises east of the town as a broad, empty presence on the map, with roads curving around its base.
