Te mapa
La Mesa is a town in Cundinamarca, Colombia, south-west of Bogotá, in the Tequendama province. Its name means the table, after its setting on a fairly flat shelf of land in the mountains that descend from the Andean plateau toward the Magdalena River valley. On a map, the town fits neatly onto this level ground.
The centre follows the Spanish colonial plan, a regular grid of blocks around a main square. Beyond the grid, roads wind down steep slopes and along ridges, following the contours rather than straight lines. This shift from grid to curve shows the town's position on its shelf, even without shading for terrain.
Its warm climate, much milder than Bogotá's, has made La Mesa a popular weekend destination for people from the capital, with country houses scattered on the surrounding hills. A La Mesa map poster shows the compact grid on its shelf and the roads curling away from it toward the valley.
Regular blocks around the main square form the heart of the town, a tidy pattern that stands out against the irregular country around it.
La Mesa sits on a level terrace in mountainous country, and the extent of the grid shows exactly where the flat ground ends.
Roads leave town in long curves, descending toward the Magdalena valley and climbing toward Bogotá, tracing the shape of the slopes.

Koteā ko La Mesa
La Mesa means something to many Bogotá families who spend weekends and holidays there. A map poster of the town brings that warmer place into a city apartment, or marks a country house or a family gathering.
