Te mapa
Leland lies in Brunswick County in south-eastern North Carolina, west of the Brunswick and Cape Fear rivers and across from downtown Wilmington. From above, it looks less like a single town centre than a collection of neighbourhoods among pine forest, wetlands and creeks. Highways and long connecting roads join them and lead toward the bridges into the city.
In recent decades Leland has been one of the fastest-growing towns in the state, as new residential developments filled former timberland. The main routes toward Wilmington and the beaches run through it. On the map, the newer subdivisions appear as looping streets, golf course fairways and ponds cut out of the surrounding woods.
A Leland map poster shows a place that is still taking shape. The curving streets of the planned communities sit alongside older country roads, the rivers and marshes form the eastern edge, and wide stretches of forest remain between the neighbourhoods. The result is loose and organic, very different from a traditional town grid.
To the east, the Brunswick and Cape Fear rivers and their marshes separate Leland from Wilmington. They form a broad, irregular band of water across the map.
Large residential developments lay out their streets in loops and cul-de-sacs around ponds and golf courses, which gives the poster its soft, curving patterns.
Major routes converge on the river crossings toward Wilmington. They draw strong lines through the town and link its scattered residential neighbourhoods together.
