Te mapa
Machalí lies just east of Rancagua in Chile's O'Higgins Region, where the Central Valley meets the Andes. From above, the contrast is striking. On the west, streets and new housing developments merge with Rancagua. On the east, the land rises sharply into the mountains, and the settlement stops abruptly where the slope becomes too steep.
The commune is the gateway to El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine. The Carretera del Cobre winds up the Cachapoal valley to reach it. Higher in the mountains is Sewell, the former mining town built on stairways, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its steep layout is famous in the history of Chilean industry.
A Machalí map poster is about the edge between valley and mountain. On one side are tidy suburban blocks and orchards, and on the other a single road climbing the ridges. The Cachapoal river adds a natural curve along the commune, so the composition has both human order and raw terrain.
The Carretera del Cobre leaves town and twists up into the Andes toward El Teniente. It is one of the most expressive lines anywhere on the map.
The eastern boundary of the built-up area follows the base of the mountains. The streets end suddenly where the slope rises.
Newer residential areas stretch west toward Rancagua. Their curved streets and cul-de-sacs sit beside older orchards and farm plots.

Koteā ko Machalí
Mining families, people who commute to El Teniente and residents who moved to Machalí for the mountain views all have their own connection to this landscape. The map puts the town and the road into the Andes on the same sheet.
