Te mapa
Minamishibetsuchō lies in the Shibetsu area of Kamikawa, in northern-central Hokkaido. Like many towns on the island, it was laid out during the settlement period, and on the map its streets form a clear, regular grid, very different from the tangled lanes of older Japanese towns further south.
The upper Teshio River, one of Hokkaido's longest rivers, flows through the basin, and its curving course contrasts with the straight streets. Beyond the town, the flat land is divided into large, rectangular farm plots bounded by straight roads, before forested hills close in at the edges of the valley.
A Minamishibetsuchō map poster shows the particular character of inland Hokkaido: straight blocks, broad fields, a meandering river and snowy hills just outside the frame. In monochrome it reads almost like a surveyor's plan, calm, spacious and well ordered.
The town's streets form an even grid of right-angled blocks, typical of Hokkaido's planned settlements and very clear in black and white.
The river winds through the basin beside the town, a soft irregular curve cutting across the otherwise geometric layout.
Beyond the built area, straight farm roads divide the flat basin into large regular plots that extend toward the surrounding hills.
