Te mapa
Mo i Rana sits at the innermost point of the Ranfjord in Nordland, northern Norway, only a short distance south of the Arctic Circle. On a map the town is squeezed between the water and the surrounding mountains, with the Ranelva river entering the fjord nearby. Streets follow the shoreline and climb onto the slopes wherever the terrain allows.
For much of the twentieth century the town was defined by the state-owned ironworks, Norsk Jernverk, and the large industrial area it occupied by the harbour. Industry remains important, and the harbour and works still make up a major section of the map. The Svartisen glacier, one of Norway's largest, lies in the mountains to the northwest.
A Mo i Rana map poster captures a town shaped by landscape and industry together: the long, narrow fjord, the river, the working harbour and the residential areas arranged along the valley. It is a clean and dramatic composition for anyone who has lived near the Arctic Circle.
The fjord ends at the town, forming a strong, long wedge of water that dominates the southwestern part of the map.
The river flows out of the valley and into the fjord near the town, adding a winding line that meets the straight shore.
The large industrial area by the water, historically home to the ironworks, forms a distinctive, open block beside the town centre.
