Te mapa
Motomiya occupies a stretch of the Nakadōri valley in central Fukushima, between the larger cities of Kōriyama to the south and Nihonmatsu to the north. The Abukuma River runs through it from south to north, and the town grew up as a stop on the old Ōshū Kaidō highway that followed the valley, a position that shows clearly in the way the streets line up on a map.
Transport lines run parallel to the river: the Tōhoku Main Line and the Tōhoku Shinkansen, the Tōhoku Expressway, and national highways all follow the same north–south corridor. Beyond them, rice fields and scattered settlements reach west toward the foothills of Mount Adatara, while low hills close in on the eastern side of the valley.
The present city was formed in 2007, when Motomiya town merged with the neighbouring village of Shirasawa, and its boundaries take in both valley floor and upland. A Motomiya map poster frames the dense centre by the river alongside the orderly field patterns around it, a reminder of how Japanese towns are shaped by the corridors that pass through them.
The river winds north through the city, its bends and flood plain setting the direction for much of the street network and giving the print a strong central line.
Railway, Shinkansen, expressway and highways crowd into the same valley, producing a bundle of near-parallel lines that is characteristic of inland Fukushima from above.
West of the centre the pattern loosens into rectangular paddy plots and farm roads, rising gradually toward the volcanic slopes of Mount Adatara beyond the city.

Koteā ko Motomiya
A map of Motomiya suits anyone with roots in the Nakadōri region or memories of the town, and it has a clean, linear composition that works well on a wall. The river and its parallel transport lines give it structure without clutter.
