The fort
The old fortress rises near the heart of the town. Its large rectangular outline is one of the clearest single shapes in the drawing.

Te mapa
Murzuk lies in the Fezzan, the desert region of south-western Libya, deep in the Sahara. For centuries it was an important stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes and served as the capital of the Fezzan. An old fortress, rebuilt during the Ottoman period, still dominates the town.
From above, Murzuk looks like a small island of streets and palm gardens in an enormous expanse of sand and gravel. To the south and west lies the Murzuq Sand Sea, one of the great dune fields of the Sahara. Its ridges stretch for hundreds of kilometres with no settlement at all.
A Murzuk map poster makes that contrast its subject. There is the compact settlement, the cultivated patches fed by groundwater, a few long roads crossing the desert, and then emptiness. In black and white, the town appears as a fine cluster of detail in a vast, quiet field.
The old fortress rises near the heart of the town. Its large rectangular outline is one of the clearest single shapes in the drawing.
Cultivated plots and date palm groves, watered from below ground, surround the settlement. They form a soft, irregular ring between the streets and the desert.
A few long roads lead away across open ground towards other Fezzan towns. They are thin, straight lines in an otherwise empty frame.

Koteā ko Murzuk
The poster suits desert travellers, historians of the Sahara and people with roots in the Fezzan. It shows how small an oasis town looks against the scale of the land around it.
You can add a title, a subtitle and a coordinates line, in Latin or Arabic script, perhaps with a date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the Sahara naturally.
