Te mapa
Naka lies in central Ibaraki, north of Mito. It formed in 2005 when the town of Naka merged with the neighbouring town of Urizura. Instead of one dense centre, the map shows several small clusters of housing and shops connected by country roads. Wide areas of rice paddies and farmland separate them.
The Naka River curves along the city's southern side before it reaches the Pacific near Mito and Hitachinaka. Its meanders, levees and the flat, low ground beside it are the clearest natural features on the map. North of the river, the land rises gently into wooded hills and small valleys where the roads start to follow the terrain.
The city is also known for science. Japan's fusion research centre is based in Naka and houses the JT-60SA experimental reactor. A Naka map poster, though, shows mostly quiet farmland and a river, drawn in thin lines and set against large areas of open ground.
The Naka River loops across the plain in wide curves, with farmland and small settlements pressed up against its banks and levees.
Large open areas of paddy fields lie between the settlements. On the poster they appear as calm white space crossed by a thin network of farm roads.
The city grew from separate towns, so its map shows several small cores rather than one downtown. Each has its own knot of streets.

Koteā ko Naka
Naka appeals to people from the countryside around Mito, researchers who have worked at the fusion institute, and anyone who likes maps where the river and fields do most of the work.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates yourself, perhaps with a year or the name of a street you lived on, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits the city's scientific side particularly well.
