Te mapa
New Canaan is in Fairfield County, in the southwest corner of Connecticut. Its map looks very different from a grid town. A compact village centre, with Elm Street and the end of a Metro-North branch line, sits among long, curving roads that follow the ridges and streams. Houses are spread widely across heavily wooded land.
The town is closely linked with mid-century modern architecture. Philip Johnson's Glass House is here, along with the homes of the architects known as the Harvard Five. More recently, Grace Farms added the long, winding River building designed by SANAA. All of these sit quietly within the town's green, lightly built landscape.
A New Canaan map poster shows how much of the town is open space. The dense lines of the village give way to a loose web of lanes, cul-de-sacs and ponds, with large empty areas between them. In print, the effect is airy and calm, a map mostly of woods crossed by thin lines of road.
The New Canaan branch ends in the village centre. The line coming in from the south is one of the few straight elements on the map.
Roads outside the village bend to follow the terrain. Together they create an irregular, organic pattern that fills the rest of the sheet.
Small bodies of water are spread through the woods. They add soft shapes that break up the network of lanes.

Koteā ko New Canaan
Architecture lovers, commuters who took the branch line into the city for years, and families settled on a quiet lane all find something familiar in this map. It captures the town's low density and green character in a way a photograph of Main Street cannot.
