Te mapa
North Myrtle Beach stretches along the northern part of South Carolina's Grand Strand. On a map it forms a long, narrow strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, which runs behind the beach and separates it from the mainland.
The city was created in 1968 by merging four beach communities: Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach and Windy Hill. Their names still mark sections of the shoreline. Streets run in a grid parallel to the ocean, with cross streets leading down to the sand.
A North Myrtle Beach map poster captures this linear coastal form. At the northern end, Cherry Grove gives way to marshland and tidal channels. Ocean Drive is known as the home of the shag, a dance that became the official state dance of South Carolina.
The beach runs as a long, straight edge along the ocean. On the poster it defines the whole composition, with streets set parallel to the sand.
The waterway runs behind the city, cutting it off from the mainland. Its line forms the inland boundary of the beach strip.
At the northern end, the grid breaks into marsh and tidal inlets. Curving channels and open water contrast with the orderly streets to the south.
