Norton lies in Mashonaland West, about forty kilometres west of Harare on the main road toward Bulawayo. It grew up as a farming and industrial centre and has expanded quickly as a home for people who work in the capital. On a map it shows residential suburbs clustered around a small commercial core, with the highway and railway passing through.
Water shapes the setting. The Manyame River flows past the town and is dammed on either side of it: Lake Chivero lies upstream toward Harare, and Lake Manyame lies downstream to the northwest. Both reservoirs show on the wider map as large, irregular shapes, their fingered shorelines tracing the valleys they flooded among the surrounding farms and bush.

The river passes close to the town on its way from one reservoir to the other. Its course shows as a thin, winding line with the green of its banks.

Dams on the Manyame have created two large lakes near Norton. Their irregular, many-armed outlines add dramatic shapes to the edges of the map.
