Te mapa
Ōiso is a small town on the Kanagawa coast, facing Sagami Bay between Hiratsuka and Odawara. On a map it forms a narrow strip. The shoreline runs along one side, and the wooded slopes of Mount Kōma and the low hills climb inland on the other. Rail tracks and the coast road run parallel between them, with the town's streets packed into the space left over.
The town has a long history as a place to stop and a place to rest. It was a post station on the Tōkaidō, the old road between Edo and Kyoto. In 1885 it opened what is often described as Japan's first sea-bathing beach. Later, statesmen including Itō Hirobumi and Yoshida Shigeru built villas here, drawn by the mild climate and the sea.
An Ōiso map poster captures the whole arrangement: the beach curving along the bay, the historic road threading through town, and the hills where the villas once stood. It suits people who spend weekends on the Shōnan coast, people who know the town from Japanese history, and anyone who likes a map where land and sea share the page evenly.
The coastline makes a long, gentle curve along the southern edge of town. The empty sea gives the poster a calm, open side.
The historic highway between Edo and Kyoto passed through Ōiso as a post town. Its line still runs through the street plan parallel to the coast.
Behind the town the ground rises into wooded hills. Here the streets turn winding and sparse, in the area once favoured for seaside residences.
