Te mapa
Patarrá is a district in the canton of Desamparados, south-east of central San José. It lies where the dense suburbs of the Central Valley meet the hills that rise to the south. On the map, the difference is clear: compact residential streets on the lower ground give way to winding roads and scattered houses as the land climbs.
The Central Valley is Costa Rica's most populated area, and it has spread over the past few decades into places like Patarrá. The district still keeps a partly rural feel, with farms, pasture and patches of woodland on the slopes. Small streams cut ravines through the terrain, and roads follow the ridges between them.
A Patarrá map poster captures the point where the city ends and the hills begin. The regular suburban blocks form one texture, and the looping mountain roads form another. Together they make a balanced composition with a sense of height, even in black and white. It is a map that ticos from the area will recognise at once.
Closely packed residential streets fill the lower part of the district. They are part of the continuous built-up area spreading from San José.
As the ground rises to the south, the roads begin to twist and loop along ridges. Their curves show the slope without any shading.
Small watercourses cut through the hills. They leave gaps in the built-up area and add natural lines to the composition.
