Colonial grid
The historic centre is laid out in square blocks around a central plaza. It is the kind of regular pattern that looks especially clean in black and white.

Te mapa
Rivas is the capital of Rivas Department in south-western Nicaragua. It sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. The town has a classic Spanish colonial layout, a regular grid of blocks around a central square, and the Pan-American Highway runs close by on its way to Costa Rica.
Rivas has a notable place in Central American history. In 1856 it was the site of a battle against the forces of the American filibuster William Walker, and the event is still commemorated in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. A short distance east, the port of San Jorge sends ferries across the lake to Ometepe island.
A Rivas map poster sets a compact, regular street grid in a remarkable geography, with a large lake on one side and the ocean not far away on the other. The blocks around the plaza, the roads leading to the lake and the highway at its edge give the map a clear structure and a strong sense of location.
The historic centre is laid out in square blocks around a central plaza. It is the kind of regular pattern that looks especially clean in black and white.
A short road leads east to San Jorge on the shore of Lake Nicaragua. From there, ferries cross to Ometepe.
The main highway to the Costa Rican border passes along the edge of town, forming a long line against the tighter urban grid.

Rivas is a waypoint for many travellers heading to Ometepe or the Pacific beaches, and it is home to many families with deep roots in the region. A map poster captures the town and its unique position between lake and ocean.
