Te mapa
Rock Island sits on the Illinois bank of the Mississippi, one of the Quad Cities alongside Moline, Davenport and Bettendorf. Here the river flows roughly from east to west, and the map shows a city laid out in grids along the bluffs, with bridges reaching north across the water to Iowa.
Just offshore lies Arsenal Island, home of the Rock Island Arsenal, a large army installation with origins in the nineteenth century. To the south the Rock River curves toward its confluence with the Mississippi, so the city is framed by water on two sides. Lock and Dam 15 and the Centennial Bridge add further strong lines to the riverfront.
The city also gave its name to the Rock Island Line, a railroad made famous in song, and it is home to Augustana College on the hillside above downtown. A Rock Island map poster brings together river, island, grid and bridges in a composition that tells the story of a working river town.
The long island in the Mississippi carries the Rock Island Arsenal, and its shape sits prominently between the Illinois and Iowa shores in the middle of the map.
Several crossings, including the arched Centennial Bridge, connect Rock Island with Davenport and draw clean, confident lines across the wide river.
South of the city the Rock River winds through lowlands toward the Mississippi, giving the map a second waterway and a softer southern edge.
