Te mapa
From above, Sakaide is shaped by the Seto Inland Sea. Along the shore, straight-edged blocks of reclaimed land hold docks, factories and storage yards. Behind them the older town has a denser, finer street pattern, and further inland that gives way to rice fields and low wooded hills. Much of the coastline here was built rather than found, and the map shows it in its ruler-straight lines.
The city's best-known structure sits at its northern edge. The Great Seto Bridge leaves the Sakaide shore and crosses the strait to Okayama Prefecture by way of a chain of small islands. On a map it reads as a thin dotted line of spans running across open water, linking Shikoku and Honshu. Few city maps show a road and a railway heading straight out to sea like this.
Before the port and refineries, Sakaide was known for salt made in shallow coastal pans, and the flat, orderly ground along the shore still reflects that past. A Sakaidechō map poster brings the pieces together: the engineered waterfront, the compact centre, the green rise of the hills to the south and the islands scattered across the strait.
The bridge system begins at the city's northern shore and hops between small islands on its way across the Inland Sea, so the line of roads and rails carries on well past the coast.
Large rectangles of made land push out into the sea, with straight quays and basins. They contrast sharply with the irregular natural coast further along the bay.
Inland, the street grid thins out against wooded high ground. On a monochrome print this shows as a quiet band of open space behind the town.

Koteā ko Sakaidechō
Sakaide suits anyone with a connection to Shikoku or the Inland Sea, whether they grew up here or crossed the bridge once and remember the view. The mix of sea, industry and old town makes a map that is detailed without being busy.
