Te mapa
Sarpsborg lies in southeastern Norway, and the Glomma, the country's longest river, shapes its map. The river runs through the town in a wide course and drops over Sarpsfossen, a very powerful waterfall by volume. The waterfall is surrounded by industry, most notably Borregaard's large site, which has used the river's power for more than a century.
The town was founded in 1016 by Olav Haraldsson, later Saint Olav, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Norway. The original settlement was destroyed by a landslide in 1702. Today's centre is a compact grid near the river, with residential districts spreading over the surrounding low ridges and between areas of forest and farmland.
On the map the river is the clear main subject, widening, narrowing and splitting around islands. The street network gathers on either side. A Sarpsborg map poster captures the Glomma, the waterfall and the town that grew up around it, with lakes and woodland filling the edges.
Norway's longest river flows through the town in a broad, winding channel. It is the most prominent feature on the poster and divides the town into distinct parts.
The waterfall shows as a narrowing and break in the river beside large industrial grounds. It is the reason the town and its industries developed on this spot.
The town centre is a small, orderly grid near the river. Around it, residential areas extend across low ridges between forest and fields.

Koteā ko Sarpsborg
For people from Østfold, and for anyone with a connection to the Glomma, the map shows a familiar landscape of river, industry and forest. A thousand years of history in one town also makes it an appealing piece for a study or living room.
