Te mapa
Shajing is a subdistrict of Bao'an District in Shenzhen, on the eastern shore of the Pearl River estuary. From above it is almost entirely built up: a tight mesh of factory compounds, apartment blocks and urban villages, crossed by major roads and short, narrow lanes. To the west, reclaimed land and flood defences meet the estuary.
Before Shenzhen's rapid growth, Shajing was known for its oysters, farmed in the brackish waters of the estuary for centuries, and the Shajing oyster is still a name people recognise. Since the 1980s the area has become a manufacturing district, home to many of the workshops and factories that serve the Pearl River Delta's industries.
Major highways and rail lines pass through the subdistrict, and the Shenzhen metro links it with the rest of the city. A Shajing map poster captures a part of Shenzhen that is rarely photographed: the working city of factory blocks and dense neighbourhoods, with the broad estuary on its doorstep.
The older village cores have become tight clusters of tall, closely packed buildings. On the map they show up as dense patches of very small blocks and narrow lanes.
Industrial compounds occupy large rectangular plots along broad roads, giving the map a strong, regular structure between the denser residential areas.
To the west, reclaimed land and embankments meet the waters that made Shajing's oysters famous. Together they form a clean, straight edge to the composition.

Koteā ko Shajing
Shajing is home to many people who came to Shenzhen to work and stayed to build their lives. A map of the subdistrict marks that story, whether you worked in its factories, lived in its villages or grew up by the estuary.
