Te mapa
Shek Lei lies on the slopes above Kwai Chung in the New Territories, in the Kwai Tsing District of Hong Kong. It is known mainly as a public housing area, and from above it looks like a series of platforms cut into the hill, each carrying a cluster of tower blocks. Roads curl around the contours rather than cutting straight, so the street pattern is looping and layered.
The surrounding landscape is what makes the map distinctive. Below the estate the ground drops toward the dense flatland of Kwai Chung, with its industrial buildings and one of the world's busiest container port areas beyond. Above, the slopes rise toward green hillsides. On paper this produces a strong contrast between tight curving roads and the empty shading of steep terrain.
A Shek Lei map poster captures a very particular kind of Hong Kong urbanism, where housing is fitted to the hill rather than the hill levelled for housing. The lines are short and bending, the building footprints repeat in careful rhythm, and the edges dissolve into slope. It is a precise, almost architectural image of a neighbourhood many people have called home.
Housing blocks sit on levelled terraces cut into the slope, so the map shows compact clusters separated by bends in the road and changes in height.
Access roads loop back on themselves to climb the hill, drawing a set of hairpins and curves that contrast with the straighter streets on the flat below.
Downhill, the denser grid of Kwai Chung and the port-side districts fill the lower part of the frame and set the estate in its wider context.

Koteā ko Shek Lei
Shek Lei is a place of upbringing for many Hongkongers, and a map of it tends to mean home rather than landmark. Hanging it keeps a specific block, stair or bus stop within reach, even for those who have since moved far away.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be changed, for example to add a flat number or a year. Choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and download HD files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
