Shiji lies in the north of Jiangsu province, on the low, flat plain that covers much of this part of eastern China. There is little for the streets to bend around, so the map is made of straight lines. Main roads run through the town, side streets meet them squarely, and the farmland beyond is cut into regular rectangular plots.
Towns in northern Jiangsu have grown quickly in recent decades, and you can see it from above. Older, finer-grained blocks sit near the centre, while newer residential compounds and wider roads appear towards the edges. Irrigation channels and small watercourses thread through the fields around the town, adding thin lines that break up the geometry.
