Valley-floor streets
Streets and houses follow the low ground between the hills, so the built-up area stretches along the valley and doesn't spread outward, which gives the poster a long, directional composition.

Te mapa
Shimobuchi lies in the hill country of central Nara Prefecture, where the land leaves the flat Nara Basin behind and climbs toward the forested ranges of Yoshino. On a map the town reads as a narrow, practical shape. Houses and roads follow the floor of the valley, and the slopes on either side stay mostly empty. Most of the drawing comes from the terrain, not from any grand plan.
The Yoshino River area defines the region, and the watercourses around Shimobuchi carry the eye along the valley in long curves. Roads keep close to the low ground, meeting at small junctions and then heading into the hills along side valleys. Rice fields and orchards fill whatever flat ground is left. Seen from above, the effect is quiet and linear, a settlement drawn by rivers and contour lines.
A Shimobuchi map poster suits someone who knows this part of Japan firsthand: the train into the Yoshino hills, the valley roads, the edge of the mountains that begins almost straight away. In monochrome the lines are spare. There is no dense grid, just a thread of streets between the blank space of the forested slopes, which leaves plenty of calm room on the wall.
Streets and houses follow the low ground between the hills, so the built-up area stretches along the valley and doesn't spread outward, which gives the poster a long, directional composition.
The watercourses of the Yoshino area cut soft arcs through the map. Roads run beside them and bridges cross them, which sets a gentle rhythm against the straighter lines of the lanes.
Hills rise close on either side, and with few roads on them they appear as wide open fields of paper that frame the settled strip in the middle.

Koteā ko Shimobuchi
People who grew up in the Nara hills, or who travelled through Yoshino, often remember the land's shape more than any single building. This map keeps that memory as a few restrained lines of river, road and valley, with no clutter.
You can add your own title, a subtitle and the coordinates line, for example a family name or a year. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. It comes as a $9 digital download or as a printed poster.
