Te mapa
Smithtown lies on Long Island's North Shore in Suffolk County, around the valley of the Nissequogue River. The river starts as a chain of ponds and streams, then widens into a tidal estuary before it reaches Long Island Sound. On a map it forms a strong green-and-blue spine. Wooded parkland along its banks, including Caleb Smith State Park Preserve and Blydenburgh County Park, keeps large areas free of streets.
The town's founding legend is well known locally. Richard Smith was supposedly granted all the land he could ride around in a day on the back of a bull. A large bull statue at the junction of Routes 25 and 25A marks the story. Around the old Main Street, roads branch through leafy suburban neighbourhoods with irregular lots and curving lanes.
A Smithtown map poster shows how the river valley and the parks hold the suburbs apart, leaving calm open areas between clusters of streets. In print, the estuary opens toward the Sound at the top of the frame, and the old roads bend to follow the land.
The river runs north through town, widening into a tidal estuary with marsh edges before it meets Long Island Sound.
Caleb Smith State Park Preserve and Blydenburgh County Park leave broad unbuilt areas along the water, framed by the surrounding suburban streets.
Routes 25 and 25A meet near the bull statue, a local landmark at a key crossroads in the older part of town.
