Te mapa
Sōja lies in southern Okayama Prefecture, just west of the city of Okayama, on land crossed by the Takahashi River. From above, the town is a mix of streets, rail lines and rice paddies spread across a flat plain, with low, wooded hills around the edges. The river runs along the western side of town in a wide channel.
The area was once the heart of the ancient Kibi kingdom, and the landscape still carries traces of that past. The five-storied pagoda of Bitchū Kokubun-ji temple stands among the fields east of the town and is one of the best-known sights in the prefecture. Burial mounds from the Kofun period are scattered across the plain.
A Sōja map poster shows a town in an old agricultural landscape. The streets of the centre, the regular grid of rice fields and the broad line of the Takahashi fit together neatly. The hills and river give the composition a natural frame.
The river flows south along the western side of the town in a wide channel. It is the strongest line on the map and separates Sōja from the hills to the west.
Rice paddies form a fine grid across the flat land around the town. It is the landscape of the ancient Kibi kingdom, still used for farming today.
The temple and its five-storied pagoda stand among open fields east of the centre. The area around it stays rural, so it shows up as a quiet part of the map.

Sōja appeals to people from Okayama, and to anyone who has cycled the Kibi plain past its pagoda and burial mounds. The map is a calm, detailed image of an old farming landscape.
