Village lanes
Older settlements appear as clusters of short, bending lanes laid out long before cars, in contrast with the straighter routes around them.

Te mapa
Sugai lies in the south of Kyoto Prefecture, in the gentle country between Kyoto and Nara. This part of the prefecture mixes older villages, farmland and newer residential areas. On a map it appears as a patchwork: irregular lanes in the older settlements next to the neater curves and cul-de-sacs of planned housing.
Wooded hills cover much of the land here. The valleys hold fields, and the roads follow the lower ground. Railway lines link the area with both Kyoto and Nara, and the Kizu River flows nearby on its way north to join the Yodo system. On this map, terrain, transport and settlement are all easy to read.
A Sugai map poster offers a quieter image of Japan than the temple districts of the old capitals nearby. Printed in black and white, the contrast between winding village lanes, tidy new streets and the empty space of the hills becomes the subject in its own right, calm and easy to read from across the room.
Older settlements appear as clusters of short, bending lanes laid out long before cars, in contrast with the straighter routes around them.
Newer residential districts appear as smooth, looping roads and neat blocks, a pattern typical of suburban development between Kyoto and Nara.
Unbuilt wooded slopes leave wide blank areas on the poster, while the course of the Kizu River adds a clear, flowing line to the wider frame.
