Te mapa
From above, Undurkhaan is a compact block of streets set down in a very large landscape. The town sits on the Kherlen River, and the river's braided channels and floodplain form the most organic line on the map. Beyond the last streets there is almost nothing to draw: long tracks running out across the steppe toward the horizon and scattered settlements.
Undurkhaan is the administrative centre of Hentiy Province in eastern Mongolia, and in 2013 it was officially renamed Chinggis City. The province is closely tied to Chinggis Khaan, and many accounts place his early life in the surrounding hills and river valleys. That link to the empire's origins gives this modest town a weight beyond its size.
A Undurkhaan map poster shows that contrast clearly. A dense core of right-angled blocks gives way to a thin scatter of roads, and then to empty paper. In black and white, the curving river against the straight streets becomes the whole composition. It reads less like a city plan and more like a record of how people settle open country.
The river passes close to town in several loose, looping channels. On the poster it is the one line that ignores the grid and wanders across the floodplain on its own terms.
The centre is a tight set of rectangular blocks, typical of Mongolian provincial capitals planned in the twentieth century. It stands out sharply from the empty land around it.
A few long roads and tracks leave town and run straight toward the horizon. They give the edges of the map a quiet sense of great distance.

Koteā ko Undurkhaan
People who have crossed eastern Mongolia, or who have family roots in Hentiy, often want something that holds the scale of that country. A map of Undurkhaan does this simply: a small, orderly town, a river, and a lot of open space.
You can set the title to Undurkhaan or Chinggis City and add a date or a line of coordinates. Choose one of five styles. Sand suits the steppe palette, and Noir makes the river read like ink on dark ground.
