Wenxing lies in northern Hunan, in the flat, wet country where the Xiang River approaches Dongting Lake, one of China's largest freshwater lakes. From above, water is everywhere. Rivers and channels curve through the land, ponds and paddies fill the gaps, and the town's streets are laid out on the drier ground between them.
