Te mapa
Yanai lies on the Seto Inland Sea coast in the southeast of Yamaguchi Prefecture. From above, the town fills a strip of flat land between the water and the wooded hills behind it. A river runs through the centre to the bay, and the streets fit into the narrow lowland. Offshore, islands dot the calm inland sea.
Yanai was once a prosperous trading town, and its Shirakabe district preserves a street of white-walled merchant houses from the Edo period. The town is also known for its goldfish lanterns, kingyo chōchin, small red and white paper lanterns shaped like fish. In summer they are hung in great numbers along the old streets.
A Yanai map poster shows the town squeezed between hill and sea. The coastline and river give the composition its main lines, and the finer grain of the old quarter adds detail at the centre. Around the town the open water and the rising ground frame the whole print.
The historic merchant street, lined with white-walled houses, lies in the heart of the town. On the map it forms part of the dense older core near the river.
The town faces a sheltered bay, with islands scattered offshore. The coastline forms a strong edge along one side of the map.
Wooded slopes rise close behind the flat centre. On the map they appear as open ground that limits the town's spread inland.

The poster suits anyone who has walked the white-walled streets or seen the goldfish lanterns in summer, or who has family in Yamaguchi. The mix of coast, river and old quarter makes a gentle, detailed composition.
