Te mapa
Yeongam lies in the southwest of South Korea, in Jeollanam-do, where low rice plains meet steep granite mountains. From above, the town centre is a compact grid of streets at the foot of Wolchulsan. The national park's jagged ridges rise sharply to the south, and to the north and west the land opens toward the Yeongsan River, its estuary and the reclaimed flats near the coast.
Wolchulsan, whose name refers to the moon rising, is one of the country's smallest but most dramatic national parks, known for its rock peaks and cliffside trails. The county also hosted the Korean Grand Prix at the Korea International Circuit from 2010 to 2013. Local tradition names Yeongam as the birthplace of Wang In, a scholar said to have carried Chinese learning to Japan.
A Yeongam map poster shows a small town poised between mountain and plain. The dense centre, the fields that spread away from it and the contour of the peaks create a composition full of contrast. It suits hikers, motorsport fans and families from this quiet corner of the southwest.
Rugged granite peaks rise just south of the town, where streets give way to mountain trails and the map empties into steep terrain.
The compact centre sits at the foot of the mountains in regular blocks, a small, dense cluster against the wide open landscape.
Flat rice fields and water channels stretch toward the Yeongsan River and the coast, dividing the land into a fine geometric pattern.
