Te mapa
Yopal is the capital of Casanare, one of Colombia's eastern plains departments. It sits where the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera give way to the flat savannas of the Orinoquía, so a map of the city shows two different landscapes. Gentle hills run along one side, and open plains crossed by rivers stretch out along the other.
The city has grown quickly since Casanare became a department in 1991 and oil was developed in the region. Its streets form a broadly regular grid that has been extended again and again, with newer neighbourhoods added at the edges. The Cravo Sur River runs nearby, and its wide braided bed is a strong natural line on the map.
The name is said to come from the yopo, a tree that grows widely across the region and the plains. A Yopal map poster captures a city still taking shape. It shows the dense centre, the expanding outer districts and the contrast between ordered streets and the loose, meandering rivers of the llanos beyond the last houses.
On one side of the city the land rises into the first ridges of the Andes, a textured band that contrasts with the flatness of the rest of the map.
A broad river bed with shifting channels and sandbars passes close to the city. Its braided shape is typical of the rivers that come down from the mountains onto the plains.
The regular street plan of the centre is repeated in newer districts at the edges, showing in plain lines how quickly the city has grown.

Koteā ko Yopal
Many people arrived in Yopal in recent decades, and a map of it marks the place where a new chapter began. Add the year you moved there or a family name to the title, and the coordinates line records the exact spot.
The llanos look good in Sand or Paper, while Noir makes the rivers stand out and Blueprint and Classic keep things crisp. Download the six-size HD set for $9, or order a matte print with or without a wooden frame.
