The map

About this Yuriria map poster

Yuriria is a town in the south of Guanajuato, set beside the Laguna de Yuriria. From above, the town forms a regular colonial grid on the eastern side of the lagoon, while the water spreads out to the west with small islands and irregular marshy edges. The contrast between the straight streets and the soft outline of the lagoon is the defining feature of the map.

The lagoon itself is largely a human creation. In the 1540s the Augustinian friar Diego de Chávez channelled water from the Lerma River into a natural depression, making it one of the earliest large hydraulic works of colonial Mexico. The friars also built the Ex-Convento de San Pablo, a massive sixteenth-century church and cloister whose fortress-like walls still dominate the town centre.

A Yuriria map poster brings together town and water in one composition. The convent block sits squarely among the colonial streets, and the lagoon's broad shape balances the grid with open space. It is a map with a clear historical story, visible in the geometry of the streets and the unusual outline of the lake.

01

Laguna de Yuriria

The lagoon, created by diverting water from the Lerma River in the sixteenth century, fills much of the frame with a wide, irregular shape and small islands.

02

Ex-Convento de San Pablo

The Augustinian convent occupies a large, solid block in the centre, its outline clearly different from the smaller houses and plazas around it.

03

Colonial grid

The town's streets follow a regular pattern of straight blocks, a typical colonial layout that reads crisply against the curving edge of the water.

Why Yuriria

A map that means something

Yuriria is home to many families who emigrated north over the decades, and a map of the town is a way to keep the lagoon and the convent close. It also suits anyone who has visited and remembers evenings by the water.

You can set the title, add a subtitle with a date or a family name, and edit the coordinates. Pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
