The map
Dok Kham Tai is the main town of a district in Phayao Province, in the hills of northern Thailand. The province is largely rural, and the town is a market and administrative centre for the villages around it. On the map it appears as a modest cluster of streets within a broad agricultural landscape.
The layout follows the land rather than a plan. A main road runs through town with shops and public buildings along it, and smaller lanes branch off toward housing and local institutions. Around this core the valley floor is divided into rice paddies, drawn on the map as a fine mesh of field lines. Low wooded hills rise at the edges, with streams winding between them.
A Dok Kham Tai map poster is for people with a direct connection to this corner of northern Thailand, whether they grew up here, married into a local family or spent time teaching or working in the district. The print gives a quiet, honest view of a small town, its roads and the valley around it.
Most of the town's activity runs along a single main road. The densest streets line up beside it, and quieter lanes lead away.
The flat valley land around the town is divided into small fields, and their fine lines fill the space between the village roads.
Low hills frame the valley, and roads curve as they climb out of it, giving the edges of the map a soft, organic outline.
