About this Riemst map poster
Riemst is not a single town but a municipality of villages spread across a gently rolling plateau in the far east of Flanders, right against the Dutch border near Maastricht. On a map it reads as several small cores joined by country roads, surrounded by large open fields that give the drawing plenty of white space.
The ground here is soft marl, a limestone that has been quarried for centuries, leaving underground galleries and caves around Kanne. The Albert Canal slices through the eastern side in a deep, straight cutting, and its bridges at Vroenhoven and Veldwezelt became known in May 1940, when they were among the first targets of the German invasion of Belgium.
