The map

About this Rosh Ha‘Ayin map poster

Rosh Ha‘Ayin means head of the spring. The name refers to the springs of the Yarkon River at the city's western edge, where the coastal plain meets the first low hills of Samaria. From above, older neighbourhoods of small blocks and winding lanes sit at the centre, and larger, more regular districts from recent decades surround them.

Major roads border the city, including the Trans-Israel Highway running north to south along its edge. These wide road ribbons frame the neighbourhoods clearly. Just west lies the green corridor of the Yarkon springs, where the river starts its short run to the Mediterranean at Tel Aviv. The water and parkland give the map a softer side.

Next to the springs stands Tel Afek, a mound that people lived on for thousands of years. It is topped by the Ottoman fortress of Binar Bashi, on the site of ancient Antipatris. The modern city grew from a settlement of immigrants from Yemen in the years after 1949. A Rosh Ha‘Ayin map poster places this ancient spring beside a city that is still expanding.

01

Yarkon headwaters

The springs and the parkland around them lie on the western edge of the city. From here the Yarkon starts its course toward Tel Aviv and the sea.

02

Tel Afek

The ancient mound and its Ottoman fortress stand beside the springs. It is a compact historic site that sits between the highways and the river park.

03

Old core, new rings

Tight lanes in the original neighbourhoods give way to broad, planned districts at the edges. On the map you can see the city growing outward in stages.
