The map

About this San Pa Tong map poster

San Pa Tong lies in the broad valley of the Ping River, south-west of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. The land is almost completely flat, and it is laid out in paddies, orchards and villages linked by irrigation channels. The main highway toward the south-west runs through the district town, and most of the built-up area gathers along it.

The town is widely known for its large weekly livestock market, where water buffalo and cattle have traditionally been traded. The market also draws visitors for food and everyday goods. Around the town, the farmland is dotted with temples and small villages, and the mountains of the Doi Inthanon range rise further to the west.

A San Pa Tong map poster captures a rural Thai town in its landscape. A strong road runs through the middle, lanes branch off on either side, and field boundaries and canals cover the rest of the sheet in fine lines. It is a calm, open composition with a real sense of place.

01

Highway spine

The main road from Chiang Mai toward the south-west runs straight through town. Shops and houses line it, forming the densest strip on the map.

02

Paddies and channels

Irrigated rice fields surround the town, and narrow channels and field paths give the poster an even, woven texture.

03

Market town

The known livestock market sits within the town fabric, a reminder of San Pa Tong's long role as a trading centre for the valley.
