About this Ţūlkarm map poster
Ţūlkarm lies in the north-western West Bank, at the point where the hills of the interior descend toward the flat coastal plain that stretches to the Mediterranean. The map shows a compact, densely built centre with streets radiating outward along the main roads, then thinning into agricultural land to the west. The 1949 armistice line, known as the Green Line, runs close to the city's western edge.
The city's name is often traced to an Aramaic phrase meaning mountain of vineyards, and the surrounding soil has long supported farming, with fields, greenhouses and orchards around the urban core. Education is part of its identity too: the Kadoorie agricultural school, founded in the 1930s, grew into Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, one of the city's best-known institutions.
Two refugee camps, Ţūlkarm camp and Nur Shams, lie close to the city and appear on the map as dense clusters of narrow lanes, distinct from the wider streets around them.
