The map
Umm el Faḥm sits high on the hills above Wadi Ara in northern Israel, on the southern edge of the Haifa District near the Green Line. The city spreads over a series of ridges and slopes, and from above its street plan is shaped almost entirely by the terrain, with roads winding around hillsides and neighbourhoods tracing contours rather than grids.
It is one of the largest Arab towns in Israel and a regional centre for the Wadi Ara area. The city is home to the Umm el-Fahem Art Gallery, which has become known for exhibitions of contemporary art and for its work documenting local history. Below the city, the main road through Wadi Ara follows the valley floor.
An Umm el Faḥm map poster reveals a dense, organic pattern. Roads switch back and forth up the slopes, houses cluster along every usable ridge, and the valley road below provides a single long line through the composition. The hills themselves give the map a layered, sculptural quality rarely seen in flatter cities.
Streets wind in tight curves and switchbacks up the steep slopes, following the contours of the land and creating a dense, flowing pattern across the whole city.
Neighbourhoods occupy separate ridges and hilltops, divided by valleys and slopes, which gives the poster distinct clusters of streets rather than one continuous grid.
The main road through Wadi Ara runs along the valley floor below the city, forming a long straight line that contrasts with the curving streets above.
