Te mapa
Abuko lies in western Gambia, inland from Banjul and the Atlantic coast, along the busy road toward Brikama. On the map it is part of the growing urban belt around Serekunda: a dense web of sandy lanes and compounds, crossed by a few main roads, with patches of green where the land has not yet been built on.
The town is best known for the Abuko Nature Reserve, one of the country's first protected areas. There a small stream supports a strip of gallery forest with pools, birds, monkeys and crocodiles. For many visitors to the Gambia, it is their first chance to see this kind of landscape so close to the coastal towns.
An Abuko map poster sets the reserve against the neighbourhoods around it. The forest forms a clear, enclosed area, and streets press in from all sides in an irregular pattern of short lanes and compounds. It is a map of a town where city and forest still sit side by side, and the minimal style makes that boundary unusually easy to see.
A compact area of forest and wetland lies next to the town. It forms a large, quiet shape on the map, surrounded by roads and houses.
A major highway runs through Abuko from the coastal towns toward Brikama and draws a firm line through the otherwise irregular street pattern.
Residential areas are made of short, irregular lanes between family compounds, which gives the poster a fine, dense texture typical of West African towns.
